If there’s one brand that comes to mind when thinking of moped-style e-bikes, it’s Super73. Based on hype alone, we highly anticipated the opportunity to review one of the brand’s mid-tier models, the S2. Find out how the bike fared in our testing process in this Super73 S2 review!

Like a Starbucks latte, a MacBook Pro, or a pair of Air Jordans, there’s often a certain je ne sais quoi when it comes to name brand products. Since 2016, Super73’s  moped-style e-bikes have become ubiquitous on the West Coast, planting the brand firmly as a recognizable manufacturer. They tend to turn heads for their aggressive and appealing designs – and the S2 is no different.

Things You Don't Expect to See at CES: Donkeys!

We were lucky enough to ride with the team from Bosch eBike Systems and take a break from the crowded booths and noise typically associated with CES. Our destination was Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, a 17-mi. scenic route full of beautiful red rocks … and, yes, donkeys.

Of course, the ride wasn’t all about the scenery. We had the chance to test ride seven different e-bikes that were powered by different Bosch motor systems. Our ride gave us a chance to discuss several key topics with Claudia Wasko (General Manager Bosch eBike Systems Americas VP), Kurt Hoy (Marketing & Media Relations), and Brian Cleavland (eBike Technical Product Specialist).

E-Bike Fires: Even the Media Gets It Wrong

It’s hard to give the public an accurate perception of an issue if the reporting is inaccurate. Take, for instance, this latest piece on e-bike fires from the otherwise-respectable Men’s Journal which claims that e-bike fires are a leading cause of death in New York City. The piece is wrong not once, but twice.

First, the piece is incorrect that e-bike fires are a leading cause of death in New York. There were exactly 17 deaths attributable to lithium-ion battery fires in 2023. Just what those lithium-ion batteries powered is a point we will return to in a moment. In a city of 8.468 million residents, those 17 deaths – while significant and tragic – are dwarfed by the 380 murders committed in the city in 2023. But within the state of New York, murder doesn’t even make the list of the top 10 causes of death in the state. The top three causes are heart disease, cancer and Covid-19.
